About US

Who We Are?

Hi I'm (William) Wenyin Cheng. I am now working at IDE-JETRO (Institute of Developing Economies, Japan External Trade Organization) as an Associate Senior Researcher. Prior to joining IDE-JETRO, I worked at OECD and Tsinghua University. I hold Ph.D. from Tsinghua University and visited Columbia University for one year as a joint PhD student.

My ongoing projects focus on three main areas: (1) the study of innovation, particularly in the domains of open-source innovation, artificial intelligence, digitalization and innovation policy, with special emphasis on the application of large language models (LLMs); (2) the integration of innovation networks with production networks to gain deeper insights into the structural and dynamic features of contemporary economies; and (3) the development of novel theoretical frameworks to analyze productivity within global value chains.

My previous research has utilized econometric methods to investigate a broad array of fields, including development, international, environmental, and labor economics. Empirically, I rely extensively on highly disaggregated micro-level big data, including patent records, customs transactions, industrial firm data, and economic census datasets. On the theoretical side, I have developed models grounded in productivity accounting frameworks, quantitative trade theory, dynamic stochastic general equilibrium (DSGE) models, and welfare analysis.

I have authored dozens of papers in peer-reviewed journals, including Technovation, Technological Forecasting and Social Change, China Economic Review. Additionally, I serve as an editorial board member for the International Journal of Innovation Studies and acts as a peer reviewer for multiple academic journals. My research has also been featured in various media outlets.

If you have an interest in innovation or global value chain, please feel free to get in touch.
